Between 1965 and 1985, the American author Frank Herbert published his six-part novel series Dune, an extremely complex saga about the House of Atreides and the desert planet Arrakis, about betrayal and courage. The story captured the imagination to a great extent, and as early as the 1970s, plans were made to adapt it for the screen. But it proved virtually impossible to adapt; director Alejandro Jodorowsky came unstuck, whilst David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation is regarded as a failure.
And then Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) decided to take on the saga. The first instalment was released in 2021, followed by the second three years later. And this time it was a success: those first two films were awarded eight Oscars. And now comes the final instalment.
Twenty years have now passed since Paul Atreides seized power over the Empire, years in which he has emerged as a ruthless ruler. And this has not been without consequences: new threats are emerging, and betrayal lurks everywhere. He becomes entangled in a mystery in which his former lover, Chani, also plays an important role. What price must Paul pay for power? Starring, amongst others, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.
