On 19 December 1843, Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas was published – a wonderful Christmas story about poverty and social injustice, about a man driven by greed who comes to his senses. The novella was an instant hit: the entire first print run had sold out within three days. The story remains hugely popular to this day and has, as a result, been adapted for the screen countless times. British director Ti West, best known for his horror films, has now also taken on this famous tale, with Johnny Depp in the lead role.
The embittered and miserly money-lender Ebenezer Scrooge (Depp) cares only about money; everything else, including Christmas, is of no interest to him. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge returns to his dark and cold house, where a memorable night awaits him, for that night he is confronted by the spirits of the past, present and future… a deeply painful confrontation.
