This film brings together two documentaries that show how language, music and popular culture play a significant role in Suriname’s identity: Langabere and Boyke.
Langabere is an ode to kaseko music. Filmmaker Rosita Leeflang explores the past and present of this musical genre. To the rhythm of the skrakidron, the film shows how kaseko became an indispensable part of Surinamese culture and a source of pride, connection and collective memory.
Boyke tells the story of rapper and singer Papa Touwtjie, a boy from the ghetto who went on to become the voice of the people. Through the eyes of family, friends and admirers, a portrait emerges of a man whose voice and personality left a deep mark on Surinamese society. Together, the films form an energetic programme about the power of culture, expression and the people who give a society its own distinctive voice.
