Every year, the Capitol – the seat of power in the totalitarian state of Panem – organises the Hunger Games, in which each of the twelve Districts must send two teenagers to compete. These teenagers are forced to fight each other to the death, with the event broadcast live on television as a perverse form of entertainment. Once every 25 years, the Quarter Quell takes place, making everything even more difficult and introducing new, even crueller rules. The 50th Hunger Games marks the return of this event. The new rule: instead of two, each District must now send four teenagers to compete. One of those selected is Haymitch Abernathy.
This film, the sixth instalment in The Hunger Games franchise, is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games. But it remains part of the same story, because anyone familiar with the series will know who Haymitch Abernathy is. It features an all-star cast, including Joseph Zada, Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes and Elle Fanning. Jennifer Lawrence also makes a brief appearance.
